Export from Bangladesh to most of the key North-American and European destinations failed to achieve its growth in the just concluded fiscal (2011-12) compared to the same period of previous fiscal.
Export earnings from USA, the largest market for Bangladeshi goods, registered a negative growth in last fiscal totaling US$ 5.1 billion. According to data compiled by the state-run Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), USA accounts total 21 per cent of the country’s total export in last fiscal as against 22.27 per cent in the same period in the previous year. Export receipts from USA during July-June period in the previous fiscal (2010-11) was about $ 5.107 billion.
Exports to Germany totaled $ 3.688 billion in last fiscal, which was 15.18 per cent of the total export earnings.
Despite decline in export value, the European state maintained its position as the second largest export destination for Bangladeshi products, largely driven by the soaring demand of knitwear garments.
The earning was $ 3.438 billion during the same period in the previous year.
According to the statistics, United Kingdom (UK) is the third largest importing country for Bangladeshi goods. The country’s export to UK amounted to $ 2.444 billion during July-June last fiscal, which was 10 per cent of the total export earnings. The amount was $ 2.065 billion during the same period in the previous year.
Exports to France in last fiscal amounted to $ 1.380 billion which accounted for 5.68 per cent of the total export earnings. The amount was $ 1.537 billion in the previous year accounting 6.7 per cent of the total export.
Exports from Bangladesh declined in most of the countries, like USA, UK, Canada and France mainly due to global financial crisis.
A drastic fall took place in the case of Netherlands. Export to Netherlands fell down to
$ 691.298 million as against
$ 1.107 billion in the previous year. At the start of financial year in July, garment exports were quite healthy, but by May last year the growth had slowed down as orders from Western retailers started declining.
However, export to some of the European countries like Spain, Italy and Belgium are increased marginally in the
just concluded fiscal because higher volume of exports
went to those countries during the period. Export to Spain, a Southwest European country, showed a positive growth.
The export to Spain stood at $ 1.147 billion during the period that represented 4.72 per cent of the total export as against $ 925.809 million in the previous year which was 4.03 per cent of the total export.
Exports to Italy also showed a positive growth and totaled
$ 977.412 million in last fiscal that represented 4.02 per cent of the total export.
The amount was $ 866.421 million during the corresponding period of previous year which was 3.77 per cent of the total export.
Bangladesh exported goods worth about $ 993.668 million to the North American country Canada in last fiscal which was about 4.08 per cent of the
total export. The amount was
$ 994.673 million in the same period in the previous year.
Exports to Belgium, the eighth largest importing country of Bangladesh goods, amounted to $ 741.961 million representing 3.04 per cent of the country’s total export.
The amount was $ 666.240 million in the same period last year accounted for 2.90 per cent of the total export.
Among the Middle East, Far East and South Asian countries, exports to United Arab Emirates totaled $ 136.717 million, Japan $ 600.528 million, Singapore
$ 179.229 million and China
$ 401.942 million.
Among the South Asian countries, exports to India amounted to $ 498.419, Pakistan totaled $ 73.212, Sri Lanka
$ 42.585 million and Nepal
$ 61.968 million.
