Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun admitted that terrorists, extortionists and militants have raised their ugly heads once again and law and order situation has deteriorated after the December 29 elections.
Sahara Khatun was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 1st Senior Police Executive Management Course at the Police Staff College in Mirpur yesterday.
State Minister for Home Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj said law enforcing agencies have launched a special drive in the capital in the wake of worsening law and order situation from yesterday.
The drive has been launched in Dhaka to seize illegal arms and curb crimes like theft, robbery and mugging, Sohel Taj told reporters at the Police Staff College in Mirpur.
“The law and order situation must be improved. We held meetings with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka where we planned the drive that got off last night,” Sohel Taj said.
The drive will gradually be taken to other parts of the country.
Sahara observed that without the help of law enforcing agencies, it is not possible to control militants, terrorists and extortionists.
“After the December 29 national election, upazila election was held after less than a month, on January 22. Because of massive mobilisation for these elections, members of the law-enforcing agencies were busy,” he said.
Sohel Taj said he had meetings with the IGP and the Police Commissioner and ordered them to conduct a special drive in the capital, which had already started on Monday midnight, to protect city-dwellers from the hands of thugs like muggers, Agyan party and Malom party.
About a rising incidence of shooting in the capital, Taj agreed and hastened to add that recovery of illegal firearms has also increased.
Inspector General of Police Noor Mohammad said the police will continue their work as they had done so far “with honesty”.
The training would help the police to increase their efficiency, he said.
The special drive would be extended to other districts of the country, as necessary, said the IG.
Asked about moves against war criminals, the state minister said that they were fixing procedures by holding discussions with top-level officials.
