Farooki’s Television nominated
Mostafa Sarwar Farooki’s comical satire Television has been nominated to represent Bangladesh at the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film in the upcoming 86th edition of the Oscars.
Television is his second film nominated from Bangladesh to compete with other films of the world to secure a place in the final short list under the foreign language category of Oscars, organised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Earlier, his film Third Person Singular Number was nominated in 2010 from the country.
Bangladesh Federation of Film Society, the local authorised body that selects Bangladesh’s entry to the short list, selected Farooki’s film from two submissions, said Habibir Rahman Khan, the president of the federation at a press conference held on Saturday at Hotel La Vinci in the city.
‘The nine-member committee selected the film produced by Chhobial. Redwan Rony’s Chorabali, jointly produced by Screen House Entertainment and Masranga Productions, was another contestant for the Oscars to be held in March next year,’ Khan added.
Countries from across the world nominate their best films for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film consideration through a short list.
From the short listed films, another committee selects the best feature-length motion picture produced outside the USA with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.
Earlier, Bangladesh nominated Matir Moyna, Shyamol Chhaya, Nirantar, Swapnadanga, Aha, Britter Baire, Third Person Singular Number and Ghetu Putra Kamola represented Bangladesh in Oscars respectively in year 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
None of these films got a place in the short list.
‘I’ll not create a hype claiming my film will be considered in the short list in the upcoming edition. But, I think any film from Asia has a chance to win the award,’ Mostafa Sarwar Farooki told New Age.
Farooki’s ‘Television’ was selected as the closing film at the Pusan International Film Festival in Korea last year.
The film, featuring the influence of Television in rural Bangladesh, had been selected for fests in Dubai and Gotheborg.
Chanchal Chowdhury, Mosharraf Karim, Tisha and others have performed in the film.
