A father in Narayanganj filed a writ petition with the High Court on Tuesday seeking its directive on the government to arrest four police officials of Sonargaon PS within 24 hours for allegedly “torturing” his son Shamim Reza to death in police custody. Dr Eunus Ali Akond, filed the petition with the related branch of the HC on behalf of Haji Alauddin, father of the victim.The petition also sought HC directive on the government to form a judicial commission to probe the allegation against the police officials in connection with the death incident and yet another directive upon the government to explain why it should not be directed to file a case against four police officials in connection with the incident.
Home secretary, inspector general of police (IGP), Narayanganj district administrator and its superintendent of police, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon police station and four police officials have been made respondents in the petition.
Twenty-six-year old Shamim, a sand trader, died in police custody in Narayanganj on May 22. He was detained on May 14 and was allegedly tortured for six days at an inspector’s house in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj, according to sources. Police tortured him for his failure to pay the money demanded by them for his release, claimed the victim’s relatives. Shamim died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on May 22.
