The father of the slain Felani Khatun has written to the Indian high commissioner in Dhaka seeking justice for the killing of his daughter by India’s Border Security Force in the Kurigram frontiers in 2011. ‘In my letter, I sought justice and demanded compensation for the killing of daughter,’ Felani’s father Nur Islam said. The letter was sent to two rights organisations —Ain o Salish Kendra in Dhaka and Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha in Kolkata.
The Indian border guards shot dead Felani when she was crossing the border into Bangladesh over barbed-wire fences at Anantapur in Kurigram on January 7, 2011.
The incident and a photograph of Felani being stuck shot dead in the barbed-wire fence caused local and international outcry.
Fresh protests came about after the Indian media reported that the General Security Forces Court of the Border Security Force in Coochbehar, India had said that BSF constable Amiya Ghosh was not guilty of shooting the 15-year-old Bangladeshi girl as she had crossed into Bangladesh from the Indian side in January 2011.
The acquittal of the only accused in the Felani killing case by the special BSF court has drawn criticism from all quarters and the people in Bangladesh.
In the letter, Nur Islam accused India and its citizens of the killing of his daughter and urged Indian government, their rights organisation and the people to take legal steps against the killing.
The letter for Indian high commission was sent by post while two others were sent by hand, local rights activists said.
