There is no other relationship like one that exists between a father and a son. According to the needs of a son, a father has to play many roles in their relationship. Sometimes, he has to take the toddler on his back to give him a make believe ride on the back of a horse, and yet at other times he has to be the solid rock that a son can firmly stand on.
Sometimes the father has to be an understanding friend or an inspiring mentor, and yet at other times a strict parent. Thus, there are such a wide range of emotions, of which some find expression, and some don’t. However, when it comes to a father who is an artist, there definitely ought to be an attempt of expressing those feelings.
Noted artist Rashid Khan has attempted a novel project, where he and his two-year old son Faraz Rashid Khan have jointly painted their own tales. The produced works are on display at a duet painting exhibition at the Zainul Gallery of Fine Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University.
The exhibition titled ‘Me and My Son: Inexpressible Emotions’ features 31 paintings done in pen and pencil and watercolour. The exhibition is an attempt by Rashid Khan to celebrate International Father Day, which fell on June 15.
Most of the paintings were primarily sketched by the little child artist with impressive spontaneity. However, it is the father who completed the paintings with water colour and bold strokes of pen and pencil. Thus, the lines and shapes drawn by the little artist were beautifully juxtaposed with the father’s input, to make a complete, meaningful whole.
One of the paintings shows an elephant grazing on a vast grassy field. The work, done by crayon, also depicts a clear blue sky that had clusters of white clouds that were shaped like balls made of cotton. In this work, the junior artist had created some sketches which were transformed into an elephant by Rashid Khan.
The exhibition also displays sketches created solely by the son and paintings made by the father. The son and father have depicted birds, fishes and trees in some of their works.
The exhibition was inaugurated by noted artist Mustafa Monwar as the chief guest. Professor Syed Abul Barak Alvi, who is the dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Dhaka, and renowned artist Kanak Chapa and noted actor Afzal Hossain were also present at the opening ceremony.
The exhibition, which started on June 14, will be open for all from 12:00 to 8:00pm till June 20.
