Well known film director Syed Salauddin Zaki and cine journalist Arefin Badal have been conferred with Fazlul Haque Memorial Award 2014. The award giving ceremony took place at the Westin hotel on Sunday.
Renowned litterateur Syed Shamsul Haque attended the award giving ceremony as the chief guest, while noted novelist Rabeya Khatun, the widow of Fazlul Haque presided over the programme. Fazlul Haque was the editor of the first cine magazine of the country, Cinema, which he had started publishing in 1950 from Bogra, his birth place. Fazlul Haque also directed a film for Children titled President, where his son Faridur Reza Sagar, the managing director of Channel i, had acted as a child artiste. Rabeya Khatun introduced Fazlul Haque Memorial Award in 2004, and since then Fazlul Haque Smrity Committee has been conferring the honour every year to a film director and a cine journalist.
Syed Salauddin Zaki, the director recipient this year, had the rare opportunity of directing seasoned bollywood actor Nasiruddin Shah for a short film titled ‘Loke, Purse and Groundnut’, when both of them were students at Pune Film Institute in India.
Zaki has also directed noted films like Ghuddi, which was Subarna Mostafa’s film debut. The director has also made films like Ayna Bibir Pala and Laal Benaroshi.
Arefin Badal, the cine journalist recipient of the award is the founding editor of Tarokalok, the first ever colour cine magazine of Bangladesh. Apart from journalism, Arefin Badal is also known as a writer and teleplay director. He received Maulana Bhashani Padak in 1987.
