Renowned Nazrul singer Ferdous Ara enthralled the audience through renditions of ageless Nazrul songs at a solo programme on Saturday evening at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre at Gulshan 1 in the capital.
The centre organised the programme to celebrate Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 115th birth anniversary, which will fall on May 24.
Ferdous Ara, was accompanied by an orchestra comprising tabla, octopad, keyboard, flute, harmonium and guitar. The singer entertained the audience with her soulful presentation of Nazrul songs for almost two hours. The show commenced with one of the most popular Nazrul songs Prathom Pradip Jaalo.
One of the songs performed on the night that deserves mentioning was Nazrul’s tragic number Laili Tomar Eseche Firia Majnu Go Akhi Kholo, which tells the heartbreaking story of epic lovers Laili and Majnu. Ferdous Ara, in her melancholic voice stirred the hearts of audiences with the song.
The singer also depicted the pain a young lover feels upon separation from his beloved when she rendered another very popular melancholic romantic number, Torun Premik Pranoy Bedon.
Nazrul always fought against all forms of oppression and thus advocated for emancipation of women from all sorts of constraints; thus, he wrote numerous songs on the issue. Ferdous Ara presented Gune Garimai Amader Nari, which is a well-known Nazrul number that glorifies Bengali women by highlighting their significant role and contribution in the society.
The singer also spoke about her passion for Nazrul songs at the programme. She presented some other songs of Nazrul including Janam Janam Gelo, Usha Elo Chupi Chupi, Naite Ese Bhatir Srote, Tumi Jodi Radha Hote, Khelicho E Biswalaye, Dur Dwipobasini, and many others.
