Legendary Nazrul singer of the country Feroza Begum, 88, is critically ill and now undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Dhaka.
She is suffering from a number of old-age complications. Alarmingly her heart and kidney are not functioning well, said attending doctors

‘Ma (Feroza Begum) was admitted to Apollo hospital on last Friday with multi-complications of kidney and hepatitis. Her situation deteriorated on Monday morning when her heart rate dropped. Doctors are now trying to get her heart rate up so that they can do the dialyses, Hamin Ahmed, son of Feroza Begum, told New Age.
Born in an aristocratic Muslim family in Faridpur district in 1930, Feroza leaned towards music in her childhood. She started her career in 1940s. In 1942, she recorded her first Islamic song by a gramophone record company. She lived in Kolkata from 1954 until she moved to Dhaka in 1967.
Feroza Begum is regarded as one of the veteran Nazrul singers of the country. She is also credited to revive Nazrul songs at a time when there was a declining popularity of Nazrul Sangeet.
In 1956, Firoza married to Kamal Dasgupta, a singer, composer and lyricist. Her sons Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed are also musicians.
Feroza Begum received the Independence Day Award in 1979 and Sheltech Award in 2000.
