Hundreds of film lovers are enjoying the world famous films and documentaries at the ongoing six-day film festival at the
Bishwo Shahitto Kendro that began on Sunday.
This reporter on the opening day found visitors, mostly the students, were enjoying Charles Chaplin’s The Circus and Brad Bird’s Ratatouille.
The silent film The Circus (1928), features a tramp’s involvement in a circus team, was a major attraction for school-going children on the day.
The animation film Ratatouille (2007), on the other hand, depicts a genius rat’s desire and success to become a cook, was enjoyed mostly by kids.
The visitors thanked the organisers for holding such a festival featuring quality films. ‘I love Chaplin’s The Circus. It was a wonderful film. I have enjoyed it,’ said Enayet Hasan who came to the film festival to enjoy the film.
‘It was so funny a story of a rat. I loved the film,’ said a kindergarten student Safin Ahmed. Other films scheduled to be screened at the festival are March of the Penguins, Khuda ke Liye, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Les Miserable, Africa, Vertical Limit, Battle of Britain, The Cranes are Flying, Mutiny on the Bounty, Jalsaghar, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Paar and Hugo.
The film festival, jointly organised by Bishwo Shahitto Kendro and UNESCO, was inaugurated on Saturday by Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, secretary at the ministry of education.
The inauguration was followed by screening of a BBC documentary titled Walking with Cavemen that features the evolution of human beings.
The representatives of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro said that earlier the centre organised a country-wide film screening festival where international films were screened in all the 64 districts of the country.
The world famous films in different languages were screened at 258 educational institutes and a total of 85,000 students enjoyed the screenings at the institutes, said the statistics of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro.
‘Films are vital to effective learning for the students. They enjoy the films at the same time learn many things. For this reason we have selected some famous films and documentaries to screen at the festival,’ said Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, co-ordination of the festival.
