Dhaka University Film Society, in association with Edward M Kennedy Center, has arranged a four-day film festival which
began at TSC auditorium on Sunday.
Titled Film for Freshers, the festival is solely intended to welcome the first year students of Dhaka University through introducing them to a number of famous movies across the world.
AAMS Arefin Siddiqi, vice-chancellor of DU inaugurated the festival as the chief guest. AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuyian, chairman of Television and Film Studies department, and Kamar Ahmad Simon, director of Shunte ki Pao were present as special guests.
The festival will be screening 15 films from 13 countries including one from Bangladesh. Every day four films will be screened at different times of the day-10.00am, 1.00pm, 4.00pm and 6.00pm.
The first day’s four films were Mary and Max (Australia), Escape from Planet Earth (Canada/USA), Despicable Me (USA) and Let the Right One In (Sweden). Four films for Monday were Leon: the Professional (France), Ballad of a Soldier (Russia), The Shawshank Redemption (USA), and Udaan (India).
Today’s four films include Lincoln (USA), A Separation (Iran), The Lives of Others (Germany) and City of God (Brazil).
On the concluding day, the following three films will be screened- The Secret in their Eyes (Argentina), Dancer in the Dark (Denmark) and Shunte Ki Pao (Bangladesh).
Members of the organising committee and DU Film Society told New Age that every year they try to welcome freshers through arranging a film festival. However, they have not managed to organise a festival every year.
A great number of enthusiastic first year students enjoyed the movies screened at the TSC auditorium.
‘Being welcomed through a film festival is great for us, the first year students. I enjoyed two films with my friends,’ one delighted Mithun Ahmed told New Age.
Another student Biplob Pal also expressed his deep satisfaction and pleasure to get an opportunity to watch some world-renowned movies.
