Maritime dispute with India
The final hearing of the maritime dispute between Bangladesh and India at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands, will begin on Monday. “The final hearing will begin on December 9 and will continue until December 13,” a top official of the Foreign Ministry told The Independent on Saturday.
The five-member court will announce the day of the verdict on completion of the hearing,, he said, adding, “Based on the information the verdict will be delivered some time in June.”
The decision of the court is final and there will be no appeal.
On October 8, 2009, Bangladesh instituted arbitral proceedings concerning maritime dispute with India.
Meanwhile, sources said that immediate-past Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni will remain Bangladesh’s agent in the case. She left for The Hague on Saturday to attend the hearing and is scheduled to return home on December 12.
About keeping Dipu Moni as the agent, a senior official of the ministry said, “Our case will be weakened if we change the agent at this time.
