Five hockey players – Russell Khan Bappy, Ariful Haque Prince, Asaduzzaman Chandan, Ashikuzzaman and Shamsuddin Tuhin – who were all facing multiple charges for allegedly assaulting the national team’s coach received anticipatory bail from the High Court on Monday.
The Bangladesh Hockey Federation filed a case with the Paltan police station on July 31 on the grounds of assaulting the national team’s Pakistani coach Naveed Alam while the players were trying to enforce a boycott in the Asia Cup camp.
Justice Naima Haidar and Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam granted bail to the players for eight weeks after a hearing in this regard on Monday.
Meanwhile, the accused players said they will file a defamation suit against the BHF for tarnishing their image with what they claimed was a false case.
‘The BHF defamed us by filing this case so we are preparing to file a case against them,’ said Ariful Haque Prince, general secretary of the Hockey Players’ Welfare Association.
