One woman was reportedly killed and at least five people were injured, three of them seriously as a train hit a passenger bus pushing it to some other vehicles at Magbazar rail crossing in the city yesterday afternoon triggering a severe traffic jam there for over one hour.
The woman reported to have died was identified as Kalpana Mawla (42), passenger of a private car bearing registration number Chatt-Metro-Ga-11-1079 and also a resident of Dhanmondi area. But she was not seen anywhere dead or alive.
However, police claimed that none had been killed in the road accident.
Witnesses and police sources said, the accident took place at around 5.5pm when a Jamalpur bound Jamuna Express train coming from Kamalapur Railway Station hit a Gulistan bound passenger bus of Azmeri Paribahan (Dhaka- Metro-Ba-11-2601) at Magbazar rail crossing. After being hit, the bus over turned and hit four private cars, one motorcycle and a bicycle reportedly killing a woman of a private car on the spot and injuring five
others. The four private cars were badly damaged in the accident.
Mostaq Ahmed, a passenger of the bus said this correspondent, “As I saw the train coming toward our bus I hurriedly shouted at the passengers to get down from the bus and all the passengers managed to get down but an elderly women failed and sustained injuries.”
The driver of the private car Mohammad Joni said this correspondent, “We are going to Tejgaon Satrasta but a bus of Ajmeri Paribahan smashed our car after a train rammed the bus.” “I and my master Masud managed to get out from the car but madam was trapped inside the car and died on the spot,” Jony added.
Hanif, a tea store vender of the area told this correspondent yesterday as the train hit a passenger bus when it tried to pass the rail crossing violating the traffic signal, it was pushed into four private cars, a motorcycle and a bicycle damaging those badly. A woman of a private car died on the spot and many others were injured, three of them seriously, he said.
Due to the accident, a severe traffic jam was created in the area and hundreds of the passengers of different routes suffered a lot, as the hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the rail crossing.
Upon information, police rushed to the scene and rescued the injured people and sent them to the different local clinics for treatment. They also cleared the way within half an hour and the road communications was restored at around 5.40pm.
Talking to The Independent officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramna police station Shiblee Noman said, “The road accident took place as the driver of the passenger bus tried to pass the Mohakhali rail crossing by violating the traffic signal. We seized all the damaged vehicles and handed over those to the rail police as the incident had taken place under their jurisdiction.”
Asked about the casualties, he said, “Two people were injured in the accident, but none was killed.”
