Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) authorities have decided to evacuate five risky buildings of hospital staff quarter. Six families were evacuated from a building of the quarter on Monday after its balcony collapsed on Sunday. Members of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense helped the families to shift their belongings to safer places. Principal of Chittagong Medical College Dr Selim Mohammad Jahangir said all the five risky buildings of the staff quarter have been ordered to be evacuated as soon as possible.
“We don’t want to take any risk about the lives of the staff and their family members,” he added. “The staff have been advised to move their families to their relatives’ houses temporarily,” the principal said, adding that the authorities are trying hard to arrange housing for the families to be evacuated.”
It is mentionable, a balcony of a building of the CMCH staff quarter at Goasibagan in Chwakbazar area of the port city collapsed on Sunday morning.
No casualty, however, was reported in the balcony collapse.
Following the incident, the district administration sealed off a three-storey building.
The six families living in the No 25 building were also asked to evacuate it. The incident took place at around 11:00 am when a repair work of the balcony by Public Works Department (PWD) was underway.
