The newly elected members of parliament, who have no residence in the capital city, will be allotted flat on an urgent basis in Nakhalpara and Manik Mia Avenue areas in Dhaka.
A decision to this effect was taken at the first meeting of the House Committee in Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman and chief whip Abdus Shahid in the chair.
The meeting decided in principle to allot 1,800 sft flats to the deserving lawmakers on the basis of their seniority and party position at Manik Mia Avenue. It also decided to allot flats at Bhaban 1 and 2 at Manik Mia Avenue for the female lawmakers, a parliament secretariat press release said.
A decision was also taken to take possession of 16 flats from the Public Works Department soon side by side with strengthening security and not allowing anyone other than the family members and relatives of flat allotees to live there.
There are 216 flats of 1,250 sft each at Manik Mia Avenue and Nakhalpara and also 108 flats of 1,800 sft each at Manik Mia Avenue. So far, 227 applications have been submitted in the parliament secretariat to get allotment, the press release said.
Committee members ASM Firoz, Mujibul Haque, Bir Bahadur, Ushe Singh, Atiur Rahman Atiq, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, ABM Ashraf Uddin and M Abdul Quddus attended the meeting.
Ruling party whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury was present on invitation.
Committee secretary and joint secretary of the parliament secretariat Shahabuddin and senior officials were also present.
