Dhaka-Dinajpur Highway closed
Flooding in the northern, north-eastern and central districts worsened on Saturday as more areas came to be inundated because of the onrush of water from the upstream.
Communication on the Dhaka–Dinajpur Highway has been snapped since afternoon as a road stretch of three kilometres went under knee-high water.
The Roads and Highways Department closed the route at 6:00pm as the road stretch between Gobindaganj and Charakmanu was submerged. Vehicles are now taking a detour for about 100km from Gobindaganj.
A 30m stretch of embankment at Titparal of Sariakandi caved in as the River Bangali in Bogra swelled.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said more low-laying areas in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Tangail, Rajbari, Manikganj, Munshiganj and Dohar and Nababganj of Dhaka are likely to be inundated in two days. Flooding may worsen in a few days.
Rivers continued to swell at 53 points out of the 73 monitoring stations of the Water Development Board and registered a fall at 17 points. Rivers were flowing above danger mark at 12 points.
The centre also said flooding in northern Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Lalamonirhat and Rangpur was likely to start improving on Sunday. Flooding in the north-east might worsen.
The Kangsa was flowing 138cm above danger mark at Jariajhanjail, Surma 91cm above at Kanaighat, Khoai 81cm above at Habiganj, Kushiyara 70cm above at Almalshid and 47cm above at Sheola, and Karatoya 31cm above at Chakrahimpur.
Reports from Jamalpur and Bogra said as the water level increased because of heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the upper catchments, more areas in the districts were inundated in 24 hours till Saturday afternoon.
The water level in the River Jamuna increased by 14cm at the Bahadurabad ferry point in Jalampur and by 20cm at Dhunat and Sariakandi in Bogra. The River Brahmaputra swelled by 10cm, but it was flowing below danger mark.
A total of 4,640 hectares of cropland were inundated in the district headquarters, Islampur, Bakshiganj, Dewanganj and Madarganj in Jamalpur. Aman seed beds on 12 hectares and transplanted aman on 4,553 hectares were inundated.
Thirteen more villages at Dhunat in Bogra were submerged on Saturday. At least 500 families in the villages have been marooned. The Bangali Ichhamati and Manas rivers were increasing sharply. Transplanted Aman on 2000 hectares and vegetables on 1200 hectares have been inundated.
The New Age correspondent in Kurigram said flooding in the district remained unchanged and river erosion was also continuing at some points.
Erosion of the River Dharla took a serious turn at Mogolbacha. People living on the riverbank started moving out. The Dudkumar has also inundated large areas at Panchmatha, Muria in Nageswari.
Many ponds have been washed away. Shortage of fodder and pure drinking water started hitting the areas.
