The net foreign investment at the Dhaka Stock Exchange dipped to Tk 128.64 crore in May from a record Tk 572.08 crore a month before as the country’s premier bourse experienced downward trend in May. The DSE data showed that foreign investors made transactions of shares worth Tk 577.50 crore in May with Tk 128.64 crore in net investment as they bought shares worth more than Tk 353 crore and sold shares worth around Tk 224.43 crore in the period.
In April, foreign investors had made a transaction of Tk 1,180.79 crore with buy-value standing at Tk 876.44 crore and sale-value at Tk 304.35 crore.
Market operators said that the foreign investment in May fell from a record amount in April as a number of factors including Bangladesh Bank’s tightening of banks’ investment and a legal battle over the market regulator’s order on company directors’ shareholding affected the investors’ mood.
Foreign investors largely invested in multinational scrips in April following their good corporate declarations. ‘Some of the investors booked profits in May while many others, like local investors, took a wait-and-see policy in the month,’ said a stockbroker.
DSEX, the benchmark general index of the DSE, lost more than 136 points in May. The net foreign investment in March was Tk 97 crore, in February Tk 121 crore and in January Tk 278 crore.
