Foreign investors’ transaction at the Dhaka Stock Exchange dropped by 17 per cent or Tk 103 crore in January this year compared with that of the previous month due to a lingering political uncertainty in the country, operators said. The DSE data released on Sunday showed that in January this year overseas investors’ total transaction was Tk 501.87 crore against their transactions of Tk 604 crore in December 2014.
The overseas investors in January this year bought shares worth Tk 365 crore against Tk 410 crore in December last year.
The foreign investors in January sold shares worth Tk 137 crore at the bourse against Tk 194 crore in December.
The net position of the overseas investors at the bourse, however, increased by Tk 228 crore in
January this year compared with that of Tk 216 crore during December 2014.
AIMS of Bangladesh managing director Yawer Sayeed told New Age, ‘The fall in the overseas investors’ transactions at the bourse was obvious amid the present political context in the country.’
Unless the country’s political situation calm down, overseas investors would not feel encouraged to increase their transactions at the bourse, he said.
Month-wise net overseas investment at the DSE had hit its all-time high at Tk 572.08 crore in April 2014 as foreign investors had bought shares worth Tk 876.43 crore and sold shares worth Tk 304.35 crore in the month.
In 2014 the foreign investors’ turnover at the bourse rose by 84.56 per cent compared with that in the previous year.
In 2014, the overseas investors bought shares worth Tk 4,406 crore against their sales of shares worth Tk 1,798 crore.
The figures were Tk 2,652 crore and Tk 709 crore respectively in
2013.
The foreign investors’ turnover at the bourse was Tk 6,205 crore in last year compared with that of Tk 3,362 crore during 2013.
