The German ambassador in Dhaka, Albrecht Conze, on Wednesday said that his government would continue its support to ensure fire safety in the Bangladesh’s apparel factories as there was huge public pressure in the western world to ensure safety standard in the factories.
‘I do not think we would lose the momentum anymore because public opinion in the west is very high. There is not a day when you do not find reports about Bangladesh garment industry in the western media,’ said the ambassador at a press conference at German House at Gulshan.
Albrecht said, ‘We have huge programmes to improve safety standard here.’
Fire Service and Civil Defence director general Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan also admitted the limitations the fire fighters were facing.
‘Narrow roads in the densely populated areas and lack of adequate water reserves hamper the fire fighting,’ Ali said, adding that they were working in coordination with other ministries concerned to modernise the fire fighting system.
He suggested a coordinated fire management system for better fire safety.
The Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management, a new project being implemented by the German government, organised the press conference on fire safety mission marking the recent visit of the Bangladeshi officials to Germany on a study-tour.
