Veteran journalist Gias Kamal Chowdhury died of a pro-longed illness at the city’s Anwar Khan Modern Hospital early Saturday morning at the age of 74.
Family sources said Chowdhury left behind wife, one son, two daughters and a large number of colleagues, relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. He had been suffering from pneumonia and lung inflammation for a long time. Chowdhury was admitted to the hospital on October 9 under Neuro Specialist Dr Firoz Ahmed Qurashi and since then he had been on life support.
Gias Kamal Chowdhury, a former president of National Press Club, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), started his career with the Dhaka Times in 1964 and later he joined the Morning News.
After independence, Gias Kamal joined Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the national news agency, and retired from the organisation in 2001. He was a former Dhaka correspondent of Voice of America (VOA). Chowdhury was also the editor of the Dainik Khabarpatra.
Gias Kamal Chowdhury was awarded the ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1992 for his outstanding contribution to journalism.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed deep shock at the death of noted journalist Gias Kamal Chowdhury.
In a message of condolence, she recalled Gias Kamal’s role in the country’s journalism profession.
The Prime Minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved family members.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday also expressed deep shock at the death of noted journalist Gias Kamal Chowdhury. In a message of condolence, Khaleda recalled Gias Kamal’s role in the country’s journalism in the 80’s. She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved family members.
