The price of ginger shot up on the retail markets in the city over the week ending Friday due to a supply shortage. Traders said that the country depends mainly on the imported ginger to meet local demand for the spice due to thin domestic production of the item.
The price of ginger increased by Tk 20 a kilogram over the week due to a supply shortage, they said. Imported ginger was selling at Tk 210 a kg while local one was retailing at Tk 150 a kg on Friday.
The prices of most of the other commodities remained unchanged in the capital’s kitchen markets over the week. The prices of rice remained high.
Traders said that the prices of rice mainly those of miniket and BR-28 would remain high till mid April due to a supply shortage with the end of the harvesting season.
The fine varieties of miniket were selling at Tk 48-Tk 52 a kg while the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg on the day.
The fine varieties of BR-28 were selling at Tk 42-Tk 45 a kg and the coarse varieties of parija were selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 a kg on Friday.
Super palm oil price also remained high and the item was selling at Tk 74-Tk 80 a litre on the day.
The price of palm oil remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 76-Tk 78 a litre.
The price of bottled soya bean oil remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 565-Tk 580 a five-litre container.
The unpacked soya bean oil was retailing at Tk 112-Tk 115 a kg.
The prices of onions, garlic and potato remained unchanged and the items were selling at Tk 30 a kg, Tk 75 a kg and Tk 15 a kg respectively on Friday.
The local variety of garlic was selling at Tk 50 a kg.
The prices of vegetables remained stable over the week.
Aubergine was retailing at Tk 40 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 40 a kg, bean at Tk 30 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 50 a kg, papaya at Tk 15 a kg, carrot at Tk 20 a kg and tomato at Tk 40 a kg on Friday.
The price of green chilli remained unchanged and the item was retailing at Tk 60 a kg on the day.
Sugar price remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg.
Broiler price remained steady and it was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while the locally-breed hens were selling at Tk 250-Tk 320 a piece of 800 grams to one kg.
Egg price remained stable and was selling at Tk 28 a hali (four pieces) on Friday.
Mutton was selling at Tk 450 a kg while beef was selling at Tk 270-Tk 280 a kg on Friday.
The price of local red lentil remained unchanged and the item was retailing at Tk 108 a kg.
Fish prices remained stable over the week. Rohita was selling at Tk 180-Tk 300 a kg on Friday, pangas at Tk 100-Tk 150 a kg and tilapia at Tk 150-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
