Girl Guides in a daylong camp on Thursday stressed empowering girls through acquiring self-sufficiency and self-defence to achieve millennium development goals.
The programme was held on Barisal Islamia College campus as part of the sixth camp of Girl Guides ranger-unit of the college. The camp was conducted by Sumaiya Tabassum, regional trainer, and Tanima Rahman Khan, regional ranger council secretary of Bangladesh Girl Guides Association.
Professor Mohsin Ul Islam Habul, acting principal of the college, was chief guest of the camp attended by Begum Faizun Nahar, BGGA regional commissioner, Dinara Begum, ranger guider teacher and members of the college ranger unit.
The speakers and participants said special care should be extended to girls for their proper physical, psychological and social development.
The participants taking different types of life-skill training emphasised the role of girls to achieve the millennium development goal of eliminating hunger, poverty and preventing stalking.
They said the girl guides must be trained for attaining leadership and self-sufficiency and self-defence not only in family affairs but also in all spheres of social life and national activities to achieve the goals.
They also called for ensuring women’s equal participation in decision-making for a fair share in policy making positions in all fields to end all sorts of gender discrimination.
They urged the Girl Guides to play vital role and raise voice in and outside the family and society to fight courageously against all evils and immoral activities including stalking and oppression against girls and serve the nation with patriotism.
