Another World Cup is round the corner and it is another exciting occasion for me. I was the captain of Bangladesh in their first two ICC trophies in 1979 and 1982 and at that time our only aim was to play the World Cup. We were close in ’82 when we reached the semi-final. But unfortunately we had to face Zimbabwe in the semis and we lost. Zimbabwe with all white players were at that time a very good side which they proved by beating Australia in their very first World Cup match a year later. If we could avoid them in the semis, who knows this could have been our fourth World Cup. I am happy that our next generation fulfilled the dream. Not only that, they took us to a position from where we can now dream to win the World Cup sometime in the near future if not now. I was the manager of Bangladesh team on several occasions and saw many players closely. I know what they are capable of. This Bangladesh team have the ability to take the world by surprise, I tell you. The composition of the team is also nicely balanced. They are playing together for a long time and have got a good understanding between them as well. My only concern is fast bowling department. I firmly believe we don’t have any replacement for Mashrafee bin Murtaza. He is our key fast bowler and is one of the most experienced players in the side. We are going to miss his experience surely. However, the way we played in the recent past against New Zealand and Zimbabwe I am very encouraged. I sincerely believe that Bangladesh have the potential to go a long way in the tournament. I would be disappointed to say the truth if we don’t reach the quarter-finals because we will be playing in our own condition and the whole nation will be behind the players. However, I am not convinced with the idea of taking only three fast bowlers as we need to play at last six games in the first round and anything can happen any time. I think this is a serious weakness and to tell the truth it may hurt the team. The three fast bowlers who we have to take will have to shoulder an extra burden, so the team management should handle them carefully. Captain also needs to be careful. I am sure Sakib knows his role and his man management is crucial. I wish Bangladesh every success in the World Cup.
