Goodfellas actor Ray Liotta has died in his sleep in the Dominican Republic at the age of 67, his representative has confirmed.
The Field of Dreams star is understood to have passed away in his sleep while on location in the Dominican Republican, where he was shooting his latest film Dangerous Waters.
Liotta’s representative confirmed news of his sudden death to The Hollywood Reporter, adding that he leaves behind his fiancée Jacy Nittolo and his daughter Karsen.
Ms Nittolo is understood to have been with Liotta in the Dominican Republic while he was filming his latest project.
The actor was best known for his performance in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 classic Goodfellas, where he played main character Henry Hill opposite Hollywood giants Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
His long career also included films such as Field of Dreams, Something Wild, The Place Beyond the Pines, and 2021 crime drama The Many Saints of Newark – a prequel to hit TV show The Sopranos.
Tributes to Liotta flooded in on Thursday, with fellow actors, celebrities and politicians all paying their respects to the star.
US actress Lorraine Bracco, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Liotta’s wife Karen Hill in Goodfellas, wrote on Twitter: “I am utterly shattered to hear this terrible news about my Ray.
“I can be anywhere in the world & people will come up & tell me their favorite movie is Goodfellas. Then they always ask what was the best part of making that movie. My response has always been the same…Ray Liotta.”
Born in Newark, New Jersey in December 1954, Liotta’s first big break came with the role of Ray Sinclair in Something Wild in 1986, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.
His career saw something of a revival in recent years after huge Hollywood success during the 1990s. Recent projects included 2019’s Oscar-winning film Marriage Story starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, as well as a long-running role on Amazon Prime series Hanna.
