The government has approved the renovation of the dilapidated Khulna Stadium, allocating Tk.11,14,16,000 for the project.
This approval came in an Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on Tuesday, which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired.
Khulna District Sports Association (KDSA) general secretary Kazi Shamim Ahsan confirmed the plans and told New Age on Wednesday that tenders would be invited in August for the construction of a pavilion building with a four-storied foundation.
In addition to the construction of a two-storied pavilion and new galleries, funds allocated for the project would be spent for the development of the stadium ground and the modernisation of the drainage system, Ahsan said.
Project works are to begin in September, he added.
The stadium was declared condemned by engineers of PWD back in 2010.
A group of high officials
from the concerned ministry and the state minister for sports had visited the stadium last year to see its condition for themselves.
On July 20 this year, National Sports Council (NSC) secretary Ahmed Morshed visited the stadium and gave his consent to renovate it, designating it a top priority.
Leaders of the Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee and numerous sports organizations have congratulated the Prime Minister for approving the Khulna Stadium modernisation project.
