The government has failed to complete the recruitment of additional 200 factory inspectors within the extended timeframe until June 30 due to some procedural complexity.
A labour ministry official said that all the complicities including amendment of a relevant rule have been completed and the recruitment process might be complete within 2 months.
The recruitment of 200 factory inspectors was the key requirement of EU Sustainability Compact as well as the GSP action plan for restoring generalised system of preferences in the US market.
After the Rana Plaza building collapse in April 24 last year which killed more than 1,100 garment workers, the EU and the Bangladesh government signed the Sustainability Compact in July last year, and later the US joined the initiative.
The Compact set the deadline of December 30 last year for recruiting 200 additional inspectors to ensure effective inspection in the readymade garment sector in Bangladesh.
Due to some procedural complexity the government sought time up until March and latter on it promised to complete the recruitment by June 30.
The latest timeline was over and the government only completed the amendment in the recruitment rules of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments and Public Service Commission.
‘All the formalities have been completed and we have sent our requirements to the PSC for recruitment of
additional factory inspectors,’ labour secretary Mikail Shipar told New Age on Tuesday.
He said that the recruitment of class I inspectors will be completed by next month and the recruitment of class II inspectors
might take two more months.
The amendment to the recruitment rule was finalised 10 days ago and now the PSC will scout for interested persons from among the BCS candidates who came out successful in all tests but did not get job for limited vacant posts, said Syed Ahmed, inspector general of the DIFE.
He said that earlier the PSC had selected 25 for Class I inspectors and 15 of them joined the post till date.
The rest of selected candidates will join after completing police verification and health test, Ahmed said.
According to the DIFE chief, 67 inspectors have so far been appointed while a total of 45 class I and 222 class II inspectors would be recruited.
