Commerce minister GM Quader on Saturday said the government was planning to import formalin through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh in an effort to control its import for illegal use.
‘We’ve already imposed strict restriction on formalin import…the government will take all necessary steps to stop the import of formalin for illegal use,’ he said while declaring Badamtali Wholesale Fruits Market in Old Dhaka a formalin-free one.
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry arranged the event with financial support from Dhaka Bank.
FBCCI president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, vice-president M Helal Uddin and Dhaka
Bank managing director Khondkar Fazle Rashid, were, among others, present.
Speaking as chief guest, GM Quader said the import volume of formalin was about 3-4 hundred tonnes a year in the past. ‘Due to the control over the import, the import volume stood only at 47 tonnes over the last eight months.’
He said stern actions would be taken if formalin was found in food items, including fish.
