The government is planning to set up a permanent agriculture museum in Dhaka aiming to make a link between modern and time-honoured farming system, said agriculture ministry sources.
The ministry already has formed a four-member sub-committee headed by the director of the food crops wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), M Abdul Kuddus, as convener.
Director of Agricultural Information Services (AIS) Md Nazrul Islam has been made member-secretary.
Other members of the committee are director of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), director (research) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and a representative from the national museum.
Md Nazrul Islam told the news agency yesterday that the main objective to set up a permanent museum is to protect the thousand years’ old farming system and also to make it familiar to the present generation. Every country in the South-Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region and other countries in the world have such type of museums to preserve their culture, history and heritage, said the AIS director.
Members of the sub-committee have visited different museums in SAARC countries for having an idea for setting up the agricultural museum, said the DAE sources.
The sub-committee members have also visited all the museums including the National Museum in Dhaka, Fisheries Research Institute in Chandpur, Bangladesh Forest Research and Wildlife Preservation Museum in Chittagong, Forest Insect Museum and Marine Fisheries Museum.
The new agriculture museum would house three galleries for agriculture, fisheries and livestock.
The museum will have the map of Bangladesh and pictures of eminent personalities, library, auditorium, old and modern farm machinery, specimen of different plants, display galleries of foodgrains, fruits, spices, vegetable, oil seeds, different types of seed, organic and inorganic fertilisers, anti-insect devices, different kinds of fruit, flower, cane and bamboo.
The fish gallery would showcase different species of sweet water fish, sea fishes and fish of different water bodies in the country.
Different kinds of birds, domestic and wild animals of Bangladesh would be on display at the livestock gallery of the museum.
Praising the initiatives, a high official of the agriculture ministry said earlier the caretaker government had taken a move to set up the museum and the present government should complete it.
