The government is trying to complete recruitment of additional 200 factory inspectors by October 15 before the review meeting of the EU Sustainability Compact to be held on October 20.
A senior government official said that the government instructed official concerned to take initiative so that the recruitment process could be completed by the time.In a meeting of Social Compliance Forum for RMG, the commerce minister on Sunday instructed the commerce and labour secretaries to sit with the chairman of Public Service Commission to find way how to complete the recruitment as early as possible, the meeting source said.
In the meeting the Department of Inspection for the Factories and Establishments submitted a progress report on the compliance issue.
The report stated that a total of 1,916 garment factories had so far been inspected under two global retailers’ initiatives — Accord and Alliance —and the government.
A total of 29 factories were closed and 17 factories were partially closed during the inspection as experts found structural faults in the factory buildings, the progress report said.
‘We have also discussed to set a proper authorities for the approval for the factory buildings in the municipal areas,’ Mohammed Hatem, vice-president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, told New Age after the meeting.
At the meeting, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed said that recruitment of additional 200 factory inspectors would be completed by October.
‘Due to some legal complications we could not complete the recruitment in time but now the problem is very close to be resolved and we hope that the appointment would be completed by October,’ he said.
State minister for labour Mujibul Haque, commerce secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, labour secretary Mikail Shipar, housing and public works secretary Md Golam Rabbani, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Md Atiqul Islam and DIFE inspector general Syed Ahmed attended the meeting.
