Health experts and physicians on Wednesday urged the government to improve standard of government hospitals by renovating the hospital buildings and making
mandatory working in village for promotion of doctors.
At a workshop they emphasised that existing health service standard was not up to the mark and still people bore 64 per cent cost of health service and the government bore only 36.
Sastho Andalan organised the workshop ‘state duty is to reduce health cost for citizens’ at the National Press Club in the capital.
Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and Gano Bishwabidyalaya trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury said in the country wrong use of medicine was the main reason of substandard treatment.
He lamented the inactive government hospital buildings and said the ruling prime minister herself would easily get the Nobel Prize if she could activate the countrywide hospital buildings.
The physician said poor presence of doctors in hospitals was the main problem in the health sector.
Big allocation in budget would not bring any change if these problems were not addressed, said Zafrullah Chowdhury.
He suggested reducing dependency on foreign aid, training of midwives, awareness of patients and citizens.
Zafrullah said in the country even ministers had no faiths on government hospitals.
He proposed that the authorities concerned could provide yearly health service to garments workers who play an important role in the national economy.
Zafrullah said the government should take adequate initiative to improve government hospitals.
He suggested that if there were a system which would a physician to serve in village for at least three years for getting a post-graduate degree, it would improve the whole situation.
LabAid Hospital chief consultant (obstetrics and gynaecology) Laila Arzumand Banu, Sastho Andalan president Mezbahuddin Ahmed, Ubinig executive director Farida Akhter and Naripakkha Women Health Project’s manager Samia Afrin also spoke.
