Grameenphone has reduced the price for pay as you go internet pack (P1) by 50 per cent in line with a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission directive.
The country’s largest mobile phone operator on Sunday announced introduction of a new P1 package under which customer will now be charged Tk 0.01 or 1 paisa per kilobyte instead of Tk 0.02 charged earlier.
The GP currently runs six more packages for mobile handsets other that P1 package.
Three other mobile phone companies — Banglalink, Robi and Airtel — cut the P1 internet price by 25 per cent after the telecom regulator had asked all the operators to slash mobile internet price by June 30.
The GP was allowed 15 more days after it requested the regulator to extend the deadline.
Banglalink, Robi and Airtel had reduced the mobile P1 internet price to Tk 0.015 per kilobyte from previous Tk 0.02 per kilobyte.
The price cut of mobile internet came following repeated protests in recent times by the information and communications technology-related organisations which demanded the price should be Tk 0.10 for 1MBps and Tk 10 for 1GBps.
The GP in the new package has also introduced features such as monthly bill cap at Tk 300 within 30-day cycle to eliminate any form of bill shock for the customers.
It means, if a customer consumes Tk 300 within 30 days, then the internet browsing option for the customer will be disabled for that period and customer will not be able to use internet until opting for another or the same internet package.
If customers take no action after reaching the Tk 300 limit, their internet connection will be opened again after the end of 30-day cycle.
Customers will also get SMS notification on their data usage and also at any point of time customers can check usage of data volume through SMS & USSD at free of cost.
