Country’s leading mobile phone operator Grameenphone on Sunday launched its 3G network in Bashundhara area of the city. Post and Telecommunication minister Shahara Khatun launched the 3G service at a ceremony at GP headquarters at Bashundhara.
Shahara later attended a video call of GP’s chief technology officer Tanveer Mohammad using the 3G network.
The company will extend the service to Gulshan and Banani in Dhaka and some areas of Chittagong in October on a commercial basis, said GP officials.
All divisional cities will be covered by December 2013, while the 64 district towns will be covered by end of first quarter of 2014, they said.

With 3G, Grameenphone is taking an important step in its mission to help the country move ahead by providing the opportunities of internet access for all Bangladeshis,’ said Jon Fredrik Baksaas, chief executive officer of Telenor, the parent company of GP.
GP bought 10 MHz of 3G-spectrum in an auction arranged by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on September 8.
A GP press release said the company will provide a nationwide network with enhanced capacity of 3.9G and instant mobile internet access for all customers.
Telecom secretary Abu Bakar Siddiqi, Norwegian Ambassador to Bangladesh Ragne Birte Lund, GP chairman Sigve Brekke and chief executive officer Vivek Sood were present on the occasion among others.
