Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan on Friday expressed its deep concern over the construction of different establishments in Suhrawardy Udyan, which it thinks will spoil the place.
The environmental organisation expressed the fear while presenting a report at a press conference at Moni Singh Memorial Trust Auditorium in the capital. In the report, the organisation urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to maintain cleanliness and greenery of the place by evicting the illegal occupants.
The organisation secretary, Abdul Matin, read out the report and columnist Syed Abul Moksud and BAPA executive member AKM Mojammel Haque, among others, spoke on the topic.
Matin said there were so many permanent and temporary establishments which had been spoiling the garden for years.
‘The golf course of Dhaka Club, many shops, tea stalls and the extension of Kali Mandir are ruining the atmosphere. The
Independence Square, placed in the garden, remains dirty and the garden looks barren as trees are decreasing in number, grass is being uprooted,’ he added.
Abul Moksud said, ‘Suhrawardy Udyan is the heart of the city. It should be protected as it has an important role in maintaining public health of the city dwellers.’
‘It needs more attention to save the garden as it is a part of our glorious history,’ he added.
BAPA, however,
suggested that the authorities free the garden from the occupants, pollution and businesses,
remove the Dhaka Club golf course, fix a
boundary for the Kali Mandir, complete the construction of the Independence Square with its full
structure and remove shops from the garden
immediately in order to save it.
