Green activists at a seminar in Dhaka on Tuesday stressed the urgency of creating new leadership with scientific perspective to implement the climate change strategies announced by the government. They said new leadership especially from youths and students would be better to implement the climate change strategies to cope with adverse impacts of global warming.
EquityBD, a non-governmental organisation, in cooperation with BAPA, BCAS, BIPNetCCBD, CFGN, CLEAN, CSRL, COAST, DUPS, DUTS, ICDF and TIB organised the seminar at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University.
Moderated by Rezaul Karim Chowdury of EquityBD, the seminar was addressed, among others, by Professor Amanat Ullah Khan and associate Professor Maksudur Rahman of the DU’s geography and environment department, Ahsan Uddin of CGC and Zakir Hossain Khan of TIB.
Amanat Ullah said the government should not expect that the developed countries would rescue Bangladesh from the climate change impacts.
He emphasised local resource mobilisation and a development management free from corruption as well as data generation on climate change impact.
Maksudur Rahman elaborated how climate migrants were entering the urban areas of developing countries like Bangladesh and said that the cities have to be prepared for climate adaptation.
He said the country is in a dire need of new leadership with scientific perspectives on climate change.
Ahsan Uddin said there is fundamental need of a knowledge-based society to face the climate change impacts. ‘Knowledge will help the nation identify what are the risks we’re facing.’
The rights-based civil society network in cooperation with different student’s organisations of Dhaka University also arranged a photo exhibition on climate change at the Teacher-Student Centre on the Dhaka University campus.
DU vice-chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the photo exhibition.
