South Asian Games’ gold-winning weight-lifter Hamidur Rahman of Bangladesh Army equaled his own national record in the 69kg category by lifting an overall 265kg in the eighth Bangladesh Games at the National Sports Council gymnasium on Friday.
Another star weight-lifter in the women’s 48kg weightlifting, Mollah Sabira of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University also broke her own record by lifting 74kg in the clean and jerk category.
Hamidul set records in the clean & jerk (149kg) as well as the snatch (116kg) category on way to setting an overall record (265kg) in the 69kg category. The previous record (261kg) was set by Hamidul himself in the last national meet in two years ago.
‘I could have lifted more, but my team decided that it wasn’t required. I won the gold medal and set the record which was a result of three months of hard work,’ said Hamidul, who shifted from the 77kg category to 69kg.
Sabira, competing in the 48kg category, set her record in the clean & jerk category by lifting 76kg while her snatch effort of 64kg fell short of the previous record mark by a couple of kilograms.
Meanwhile, Ainuddin of Bangladesh Ansar won gold in the 56kg category, Shimul Kanti Singha of Bangladesh Army won gold in the 62kg category and Monoronjan Roy of Bangladesh Army won gold in the 77kg category.
In the cycling discipline, eight gold medals were decided on the second day of cycling with Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) creating a new national record in the men’s 1200m Olympic Sprint at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Ripon Kumar, Monowar Hossain and Sirajul Islam of BGB took 1:43.26 seconds to erase the previous record of 1:43.28 seconds.
Tariqul Islam, who skipped the 40km mass start on the opening day in fear of being arrested, returned to the track and won his first gold in the elimination race after overcoming Alamgir Hossain of BJMC.
Bangladesh Ansar won five gold medals on the second day followed by BJMC’s two and BGB’s one gold medal.
Bangladesh Police ruled the first day of the wrestling discipline after winning three gold medals out of seven as Rafiqul Islam, Lovely Akhter and Hasina grabbed gold in their respective categories.
BGB and Bangladesh Ansar grabbed two gold medals each while Narail DSA won the other gold medal of the day.
In the basketball event, Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Navy moved into the final after outclassing their respective rivals at the Dhanmondi Basketball Gymnasium on Friday. Army beat Khulna 109-66 while Navy beat Board Guard Bangladesh 99-69 to advance to the final which will be held today.
Narail DSA emerged champions in rugby after beating Munshiganj 31-21 in the final at the Mohammadpur Physical Educational College ground. Dhaka grabbed the bronze medal with a 28-14 win over Sirajganj in the third-place deciding match at the same venue.
