Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina yesteday called upon the people to vote for the candidates of the AL led grand alliance for achieving economic independence of the country.
She promised to build self-reliant digital Bangladesh by giving priority on the development of science and technology, if voted power in the coming parliamentary election.

She was addressing a large public gathering at Kotalipara College ground in Gopalgonj where she carried out election campaign throughout the whole day. Hasina is contesting the national polls from Gopalgonj-3 constituency.
Pledging to safeguard the sovereignty of the country and implement the election manifestos even at the cost of her life, the AL chief promised to set up women’s college at upazila across the country if her party came to power.
Hasina also held out the assurance to double the elderly persons’ and widows’ allowances, enhance the freedom fighters’ allowance and provide free medical treatment for the freedom fighters.
Assumption of power by the AL led grand alliance would also ensure the flow of increased foreign investment and augmentation of food production, she said.
She said that saddled with power, she would revive the welfare oriented projects taken up by her previous government. Her progrmmes also include
Establishment of 18,000 community clinics and home for the poor, she added.
She hoped that the younger generation would take decision in the coming election. Voting to ‘ boat’ symbol the people of the country earned the country’s independence in 1971. Victory of the boat symbol in the election of December 29 will help achieve economic independence, she asserted.
Terming the AL government of 1996-2001 a golden era in the history of Bangladesh, she mentioned that at least 50,000 houses for the poor families were established during that period. She assured to build home for the homeless, if voted to power.
She also pledged to increase subsidy on agriculture and to sell fertilisers in open market aiming to achieve self-reliance in food production.
Hasina told her audience that she was arrested on false charges and put in isolation in jail. ” As I speak for the people, I have never bow down my head to any injustice,” she declared amid cheers of the enthusiastic people.
Referring to planting of bomb at Kotalipara ground eight years ago with the motive to kill her, Hasina said none could take one’s life if the Almighty protects her or him.
Earlier, Sheikh Hasina held a view exchange meeting with the local leaders of Tungipara at the Bangabandhu Mausoleum.
On the second day of her three-day election tour in southwestern districts Hasina was accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana and niece Ajmina Siddiqui Ruponti,
During her whirlwind tour,Hasina addressed a number of public gatherings in Munshiganj, Faridpur and Madaripur.
On Thursday, the last day of her trip, Hasina is scheduled to address public meetings in Bagerhat, Jessore and Khulna.
