Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe will arrive today to formally take the helm of the national cricket team on a two-year contract with his beginning already soured by the controversy surrounding Sakib al Hasan.
Hathurusinghe, who oversaw the recent series against India as an interim coach, hogged the headlines after his complaint against Sakib over the player’s intention of playing in the Caribbean Premier League.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board subsequently banned Sakib for six months and is now waiting for the coach to arrive to fix up the training schedule for the all-rounder, who will miss the forthcoming series against West Indies unless his ban is lifted.
Sakib is yet to appeal against the suspension, which will end a month before the World Cup 2015.
New coach Hathurusinghe is expected to be accompanied by his compatriot Piyal Wijetunga, who is expected to take over as the Tigers’ spin bowling coach.
