The Bangladesh Railway authorities were criticized by the High Court on Thursday (July 21, 2022) for poor administration of the railway services, including ticket scalping, and it was noted that no passenger is allowed to ride on the train roof.
“If any train carries passengers on the roof, appropriate action will be taken against the responsible officials who will fail to stop it, and even, they cannot imagine what consequence they will face,” the HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat said during a suo muto (voluntary) proceeding on this issue.
The court said that taking passengers on the rooftop of the train has been declared closed from today. It has been asked to report by July 31 what steps have been taken to stop taking passengers on the rooftop of trains and steps taken to stop black market of tickets. The court will issue a further order on that day.
The court issued the directive verbally after hearing statements from Bangladesh Railway’s joint director general (operation) M Saleh Uddin, Railway’s director traffic (commercial) Nahid Hasan Khan and Railway’s online ticket partner Shohoz’s vice president Jubaer Hossain.
The three officers were summoned in court on Wednesday after taking cognizance of Dhaka University student Mohiuddin Roni’s solo protest which was published in various newspapers and online news portals on Wednesday.
Mohiuddin, also a fourth-year student of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University, has been protesting at the Kamalapur Railway Station since July 7, demanding an end to the mismanagement at the Bangladesh Railway.
