HC issues rules on evening master’s course
The High Court on Thursday issued a rule on the Dhaka University authorities to explain why the move to launch evening master’s course in economics for professionals should not be declared illegal.
A HC division bench of Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Khurshid Alam Sarker issued the rule following a writ petition by a Supreme Court lawyer AKM Salahuddin Khan.
Earlier, the economics department initiated the move to launch an evening master’s course bypassing the article 30 of the Dhaka University Order 1973 that called for a ‘board of advanced studies’ for organising post-graduate studies. But the authorities ignored the board by beginning the course for professionals.
Then another SC lawyer Abul Kalam Azad had sent a legal notice to the university vice-chancellor, the department chair and the dean on June 30, asking them to cancel the evening course in seven days after receipt of the notice.
The petitioner also sought HC direction for the university authorities to stop all commercial evening programme, currently running at different departments of the university.
The petition also said the teachers draw ‘additional’ salaries and benefits from these commercial evening programmes in breach of section 45 of the first statutes regarding the contractual appointment of the teachers.
