Shawkat Hossain Hiron, ruling 14-party alliance-backed candidate, on Wednesday blamed city Awami League president Abul Hasanat Abdullah for his debacle in the Barisal City Corporation elections.
Hiron, the outgoing mayor, said he was made a scapegoat by Hasanat Abdullah, district AL president and cousin of the party chairperson, Sheikh Hasina, and his men.Hiron said this in an exchange of views with the city AL and BCC election campaign leaders and workers at Barisal Club on Tuesday night.
KBS Ahmed Kabir, government pleader, president of the district bar association and chief election agent of 14-party alliance, presided over the programme.
‘Hasanat, using his family members and AL and BCL leaders, made me a scapegoat like the AL-backed previous BCC mayor and MP candidates the late Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mahbubuddin Bir Bikram, Col Zahid Faruk, Enayet Pir Khan to have an absolute hold on regional AL politics,’ Hiron told the programme.
Hiron alleged that Kazi Kamal, brother-in- law of Hasanat, city BCL secretary Wasim Dewan and Jahangir Hossain openly worked for rival BNP-led 18-party alliance-backed candidate Kamal.
‘Hasanat, as my political elder brother, brought me to AL politics, but destroyed my political carrier and sacrificed me for your own interest without any fault on my part. From today I quit you and will follow only the guardianship of party chairperson Sheikh Hasina,’ Hiron said in an emotion-chocked voice.
‘I will not contest any election in future and after presenting my explanations to the party chairperson, I will also leave politics,’ Hiron announced.
Among others city AL secretary Afzalul Karim, district Juba League president Zakir Hossain, city Sramik League convener Aftab Hossain, teacher association leader Faridul Alam Jahangir, bar association leader Jahangir Hossain, AL leader Hossain Chowdhury and
several hundred party activists attended the programme.
