The home affairs adviser, MA Matin, on Sunday assured all that there was no chance of any attacks on the life of the Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, also a former prime minister.
He said the authorities had taken all-out measures to ensure the security for Hasina following reported threat on her life.
‘We have also come across media reports on probable attacks on her [Hasina’s] life. The law enforcement agencies have been ordered to take all possible precautions… Such attacks will not happen, inshaallah [God willing],’ MA Matin told reporters at the secretariat in reply to a query.
The government tightened security for Sheikh Hasina following a news item headlined ‘6-member team out to kill ex-Bangaldesh PM Hasina’ aired on CNN-IBN television channel of India on Saturday.
The news said the Indian intelligence agencies had warned Bangladesh that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was facing an assassination threat from a banned militant group.
The Indian agencies said a six-member suicide squad of the banned Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami was trained to assassinate Hasina.
The home adviser, however, said the government had taken all steps to check any deterioration in law and order before the December 29 parliamentary elections. ‘Everything is under control.’
Referring to the recent meetings of the chief adviser with the local administration and law enforcement agencies at the divisional headquarters, Matin said the government had taken all measures to keep order. ‘We had a series of meetings at the divisional headquarters where we found everything positive.’
Asked about the application of Azam J Chowdhury seeking withdrawal of the Tk 3 crore extortion case filed against Hasina by an executive order, the home adviser said he had so far not received any such letter.
On December 14, businessman Azam J Chowdhury at a briefing claimed he had appealed to the home adviser seeking withdrawal of the extortion case against Hasina, saying it had been filed over ‘misunderstanding’ in an adverse situation.
