Tenants’ Council on Wednesday urged the house owners to stop increasing house and shop rent illogically on the eve of New Year. At a press conference, they demanded amendment to the House Rent Control Act 1991 and its proper implementation. Tenants Council organised the press conference at Comrade Nirmal Sen Auditorium in the capital. Its president Bahrane Sultan Bahar said landlords should not receive rent without any receipt and they should not take more than one month’s advance.
He said though they had submitted a memorandum to the speaker of parliament and deputy commissioner of Dhaka in January 28 of this year, they did not take any step to ease tenants’ sufferings.
Bahar informed that in the country there are more than 14 lakh bachelor students who face severe problem as most of the land lords are reluctant to rent their house to them.
He urged the landlords for 10 per cent allocation of houses for the bachelors.
Council general secretary Jannat Fatema, joint secretary Abdur Razzak and Jewel Ahmed also spoke at the press conference.
