Today is the 76th anniversary of the birth of the renowned author, dramatist, screenwriter, and director Humayun Ahmed.
Humayun Ahmed is considered one of the top writers in Bengali literature, after Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
He played a key role in revitalizing Bengali literature and created memorable characters like ‘Himu’, ‘Misir Ali’, and ‘Baker Bhai’.
His storytelling often features elements of ‘magic realism’, making his work unique and engaging.
He received several prestigious awards, including the Ekushey Padak and the Bangla Academy Award, for his significant impact on Bengali culture. His contributions to literature and entertainment earned him accolades like the Lekhak Shibir Award and the Shishu Academy Award, Michael Madhusudan Padak, Bachsas Award and more.
Ahmed, a successful television content creator, made his television debut in 1983 with the drama “Prothom Prohor” for Bangladesh Television (BTV). He gained fame through various hit drama series, including ‘Ei Shob Din Ratri’, ‘Bohubrihi’, ‘Ayomoy’, ‘Nokkhotrer Raat’, and ‘Aaj Robibar’ and most notably ‘Kothao Keu Nei’ for the character of ‘Baker Bhai’.
Humayun Ahmed also explored success as a filmmaker in the early 1990s and made eight films in his filmmaking career, each based on his own novels. Two of his films, ‘Shyamol Chhaya’ (2004) and ‘Ghetuputra Komola’ (2012) were the official Bangladeshi submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in their respective release years.
He received seven Bangladesh National Film Awards in different categories for the films Shonkhonil Karagar’ (as screenwriter), ‘Aguner Poroshmoni’, ‘Daruchini Dwip’ and ‘Ghetuputra Komola’.
