Today is the 65th anniversary of birth anniversary of Humayun Ahmed, the iconic writer, script writer and filmmaker.
The writer of about 200 fictions, Humayun influenced the readers and publishing industry in Bangladesh. He was also a trendsetter TV playwright and a successful filmmaker.
Humayun was born at Kutubpur in Netrakona on November 13, 1948. He shot to fame for his novel Nandita Narake published in 1971 while he was a student of chemistry in Dhaka University. The novel earned him Lekhak Shibir Award the next year.
After his master’s degree, Humayun joined Bangladesh Agricultural University as a lecturer in 1972. Six months later, he joined the chemistry department in Dhaka University and taught polymer chemistry at the department till mid 1990s when he decided to concentrate on writing and filmmaking.
Among his popular novels are Nandita Narake, Shankhanil Karagar, Amar Achhe Jal, Jyotsna O Jananir Galpa and Aguner Parashmani.
Humayun won Ekushey Padak in 1994 and the Bangla Academy Award in 1981. His plays such as Ayomay, Bahubrihi, Kothao Keu Nei and Ei Sab Din Ratri entertained TV viewers in the 1980s.
Humayun also became successful as a filmmaker, with his first film based on the independence war released in 1994.
Humayun’s last film Ghetu Putra Kamala was released after his death.
He died from colorectal cancer in a hospital in New York at the age of 63.
Different organisations have been chalked out various programmes to celebrate the day.
The late writer’s resort Nuhash Palli in Gazipur, where the writer is buried, will be decorated with candle lights and colourful papers. Common people will place wreaths of flowers on the writer’s grave.
In addition, publishers of Humayun’s books have organised a five-day book fair at the Central Library premises at Shahbagh in the capital.
New anthologies, like Humayun Ahmed Rachanaboli 07, Himu 10 and children book Kakaru, are being published for the book fair.
In addition to the book fair, Humayun Ahmed’s last film Ghetuputra Komola will be screened today at the National Museum auditorium at 5.30pm which will be inaugurated by Humayun Ahmed’s widow Shaon.
Moreover, Channel i has declared the day as Himu Dibas and will organise a Humayun Mela on the channel’s premises featuring music, dance, recitations and different stalls with CDs of Humayun Ahmed’s books, films and teleplays.
