Humayun Ahmed’s mother tells New Age
Iconic writer Humatun Ahmed’s mother Ayesha Foyez says that her son was a really ‘naughty one’ in his childhood. Due to his curiosity he used to break the gift items and he could manage the subsequent repercussions using his wits.
But, Humayun was a brilliant student and had passion for reading and creative writing since his boyhood, said his mother Ayesha Foyez sharing the writer’s childhood in an interview with New Age two days before Humayun’s 65th anniversary of birth.
‘The most mischievous act that Humayun indulged in his childhood days was that he used to break gift items out of his curiosity of knowing the engineering aspects of the objects. Just after receiving any gift, he would have gone in a room and started “engineering” on the toys or anything he got. He would have opened the door with puzzled eyes and broken gifts in hands,’ Ayesha Foyez said.
‘I still remember that day when his father [Faizur Rahman Ahmed] gave me a precious watch and out of his habit Humayun took the watch in his possession and broke it. We became very angry on that day. And just two years back, he made the compensation of his childhood action by gifting me a precious watch,’ said an emotional Ayesha Foyez speaking from her memory lane.
Ayesha Foyez further said that the writer had passion for rich food. ‘He even used to attend the feasts organised for the poor. One day, he took his sister Sufia to a midday meal scheme of the government. When I charged him for attending the feast for the poor, in his innocent manner he replied that the yellow “khichuri” served on green banana leaves looked so delicious that he couldn’t restrain himself of joining the party,’ Ayesha Foyez said.
‘In fact, on every occasion his father, who had always been very jolly and sober man, had saved Humayun, though he always tried to keep a distance from his father. In fact we had a special affection for our eldest son Humayun and would have excused most of the troubles he caused,’ Ayesha Foyez said.
‘But, he expressed his sadness when his father remained out of the family for his profession as a police officer. Humayun used to say that he wants his father to resign the police job. He rather, wished his father to become a trucker with him so that Humayun could travel across the country with his father,’ Ayesha Foyez added.
His mother also forbade him to join police. ‘We told him to choose any profession other than police,’ she said.
Ayesha Foyez further said that Humayun developed his bond with reading and writing since his boyhood as his father had a passion for reading as well. ‘We had a lot of books in our home and Humayun used to read all of those. Moreover, his father was a writer and had fascination for literature. He used to encourage the kids to create wall magazines on special days where every member of the family including Humayun used to write,’ Ayesha Foyez said.
