Hundreds of thousands of people attended the namaz-e-janaza of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and one of the frontliners of the July uprising, at Manik Mia Avenue this afternoon.
The janaza was held after Zuhr prayers amid tight security, with members of law enforcement agencies deployed across Manik Mia Avenue and nearby areas to manage the crowd and ensure safety.
People from different walks of life gathered at Manik Mia Avenue near the National Parliament. Many arrived in processions, chanting slogans demanding justice for Hadi and vowing that his death would not be in vain.
Severe crowd pressure prevented hundreds from entering the designated prayer ground. As the number of mourners exceeded capacity, many were forced to remain on surrounding roads and adjacent areas, offering prayers from a distance.
Witnesses said some people attempted to climb over boundary walls to gain entry. A few suffered minor injuries during the rush, although the situation was brought under control shortly afterwards.
Despite being unable to access the main prayer area, large numbers of mourners remained in the vicinity, reflecting widespread public participation in the funeral.
Special security measures have been put in place at the entrance to Manik Mia Avenue, with the army patrolling the area. A large number of police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Ansar personnel have also been deployed to maintain law and order.
Later, Hadi was buried beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Hadi died at Singapore General Hospital on Thursday night. He had sustained critical injuries after being shot on December 12 following his election campaign in the capital’s Paltan area.
