A 16-year-old housewife is struggling for her life at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital after her husband allegedly poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire at Kaowdia in Savar on Friday evening, said the victim’s family members.
The victim, Pinky Akhtar Shahnaz, was admitted to the burn and plastic surgery unit of the DMCH on early Saturday.
Her mother, Ruby Begum, alleged that her husband, Mohammad Arif, set her daughter on fire after a quarrel.
She said that Shahnaz had exchanged angry words with Arif after she came to know on Thursday that he has another wife.
Arif and three of his friends entered Shahnaz’s room and asked her to leave the house with them.
When she refused to do so, she was tortured and set on fire, said Shahnaz.
Arif and his friends ran away from the house after the incident. On receiving information of her daughter’s sorry state, Ruby rushed to the house at about 11:45pm on Friday and took her daughter to the hospital.
Shahnaz had married Arif, a driver of the ETCL Bus Service, seven months ago when she was working at an apparel factory in Mirpur.
