Bangladesh becomes ITPEC member
The inclusion of Bangladesh in the Japan-based Information Technology Professional Examination Council, a regulatory body for ICT engineers’ examinations, will help local engineers gain exposure on the international market, said Japanese officials in Dhaka on Monday.
The Bangladesh Computer Council and the Information Technology Promotion Agency of Japan on the day signed a memorandum of understanding which will enable Bangladeshi ICT professionals to sit in ITPEC examinations.
While speaking on the occasion, Japan’s ministry of economy’s trade and industry deputy director general Hideyuki Ohashi said Bangladesh membership to ITPEC would give the country greater exposure to the Japanese market.
‘The inclusion is already known to the Japanese companies and some of them will soon visit Bangladesh,’ he said.
Japan ambassador to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima said the inclusion would bring some real change to the ICT sector of the country.
‘Bangladesh will get better engineers which will help the country’s continuous growth in the ICT sector,’ he said.
Shiro also said Japan was keen to bring new investment in Bangladesh and increase the bilateral trade.
Japan External Trade Organisation representative Kei Kawano said Bangladesh had competitive advantage in the ICT sector than the neighbouring countries.
‘India also has low cost engineers but Bangladesh has better taxation regime than India. So it is an advantage for the country,’ he said.
Posts, telecommunications and information technology minister Abdul Latif Siddique said Bangladesh needed to go a long way in the ICT sector.
‘It is unfortunate that we are not able to compete with the world in the ICT arena. Language is a big problem for this backward situation of the country’s IT professionals. However, with such initiative our IT professionals will get more international recognition,’ he said.
State minister for ICT Division Junaid Ahmed Palak said the membership of ITPEC would help Bangladesh produce better IT professionals.
‘We have huge talents in our country and with such initiative they will get better grooming,’ he said.
Japan International Cooperation Agency chief representative Mikio Hataeda, ICT secretary Nazrul Islam Khan and IPA vice-chairman Hisaya Tanaka also spoke on the occasion.
The ITEE test is recognised in 12 Asian countries including the second largest IT job market Japan and also honoured in the markets of European and American countries.
