Idol makers honoured in Barisal
The sixth annual reception ceremony for honouring the sculptors and artisans of idols, held in Barisal, ended on Wednesday. Organisers and guests present at the ceremony emphasised the significance of patronising traditional artisans.
Mritshilpi Sammelon O Sanmanona Udjapon Parishad of Barisal organised the programme at Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city with an exhibition of traditional arts and crafts including nakshi katha, pottery works, handicrafts and photographs.
Professor Syed Abul Barq Alvi, dean of fine arts faculty of Dhaka University, inaugurated the programme by lighting lamps, which was followed by presentation of autumn songs.
The programme was presided over by Rakhal Chandra Dey, district president of Puja Udjapon Parishad. Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner of Barisal district, was present as chief guest at the programme.
Chinmoyee Shikdar, assistant professor of fine arts faculty of DU; Dr Kazi Mozammel Haque, artist and research scholar; Shanti Das, president of Barisal Sangskritik Sangathan Samonnoy Parishad; Syed Dulal, presidium member of Bangladesh Group Theatre Fedaration, Mrinal Kanti Saha, president of Dharma Rokkhini Sava, Narayan Chandra Dey Naru, president of Barisal City Puja Udjapon Parishad and others spoke at the programme.
Crest, cash, dresses, colours and brushes were distributed among 120 artisans and potters including 20 female artisans and their associates from different area of Barisal region.
The speakers at the programme stressed the importance of harmonious coexistence of people from all religions.
The speakers also said that even though artisans and potters serve tirelessly in religious and socio-cultural festivals with their artistry, they nevertheless suffer acutely because of financial constraints.
The speakers pointed out that idol makers are not adequately paid and after the Puja festivals, they find it extremely difficult to find work.
The speakers also added that many artisans who make statues of deities are contemplating changing professions because their current pay is poor. The speakers urged the community so that these idol makers get economic and institutional support.
